Brief
A private commission for an art collector. Six rooms, four lighting scenes, no visible fixtures. The client wanted paintings, stone, and evening meals to share the same calm field of vision, with no decorative fittings and no ceiling objects competing with the architecture.
Approach
Villa Kallio asked for restraint in a way that made every millimetre visible. The architecture is low, quiet, and built around pale stone, ash joinery, and a compact collection of Nordic post-war painting. Søren's scheme hides almost all sources inside reveals, shelving thicknesses, and custom plaster profiles. The art is lit from wall slots that were coordinated before the final plaster package, allowing each beam to clear the frame edge without visible hardware. Dining and sitting areas use reflected light from joinery troughs, so faces remain soft and glass surfaces stay calm. The four scenes are named after use rather than mood: arrival, dinner, reading, and collection. Each scene changes vertical balance, not just output. Arrival gives priority to the hallway stone and one painting at the stair. Dinner warms the room to 2600K and lowers the collection to background. Reading raises two chair positions and leaves the glass wall nearly dark, avoiding the mirror effect common in evening houses. Collection is the only scene that brings paintings forward, but it never exceeds the paper and pigment limits agreed with the art adviser. The client wanted no wall keypads in the main rooms, so control is split between concealed brass toggles at thresholds and a simple app layer for staff. Commissioning took three evenings, because daylight leaving the sea-facing facade changed the whole balance.
